In 1990, Dan Jansen made a bold decision: to walk away from the drudgery of corporate life and into the fresh air of real, hands-on work. He founded Weather-Tite Exteriors in Green Bay, Wisconsin with a straightforward goal—to build something meaningful. Dan wasn’t drawn to flashy business plans or slick sales tactics. He simply wanted to help people, install quality exterior products, and escape the artificial world of cubicles and corporate jargon.
Dan’s journey began humbly, subcontracting vinyl siding work for his brother, a local homebuilder. As he mastered siding, he expanded into windows, custom metal trim, and eventually roofing. When local builders couldn’t find reliable roofing crews, Dan stepped up—and realized he had found not just a job, but a calling. There was a serious need for high-quality, dependable contractors, and Dan was determined to meet it.
From those early days, Dan dreamed big. He envisioned a company that wasn’t just profitable, but purposeful—a force that could improve lives by doing essential work exceptionally well. After establishing a strong reputation in Green Bay, he expanded Weather-Tite to Edina, Minnesota in the early 2000s, and then to Rapid City, South Dakota in 2013. His goal: to serve the entire Upper Midwest with integrity, skill, and care.

That same year, Sam Chandler—Dan’s nephew—visited Rapid City to see the new operation. The timing was uncanny: a devastating hailstorm struck the region just two days after Sam arrived. He had never seen anything like it—golf ball-sized hail tearing through homes and neighborhoods. The phones rang off the hook. The demand was overwhelming, and Dan’s one-crew operation couldn’t keep up. Sam stayed to help, and never looked back.
He noticed something strange in those early days: roofers were replacing damaged roofs with the exact same materials that had just failed. Sam knew there had to be a better way. “We had the technology to build more impact-resistant roofs,” he said, “but no one was using it.” That insight became the foundation for his vision—to create sustainable, weather-resilient homes and to challenge the industry’s status quo.
Sam fell in love with the Black Hills and made it his permanent home. He met his wife Hillary there, and they now raise their two young boys under the same rugged skies he once feared. His mission evolved to align with Dan’s: to build a better contracting experience rooted in trust, integrity, teamwork, and excellence. He developed systems and processes to scale operations, always guided by one core belief: people deserve better.

Weather-Tite isn’t just about roofing, siding, and windows—it’s about restoring the roof over someone’s head, their peace of mind, and their trust in contractors. The company grew from a humble start to a trusted regional brand with locations in Green Bay, Edina, and Rapid City. Each location is now individually owned and operated—Dan’s daughter Danielle and her husband Jesse lead the Green Bay company, Bryan Bolkcom oversees Edina and the Twin Cities, and Sam continues to expand in South Dakota, Arizona, and beyond. Though the individual owners often collaborate and share innovations, each owner takes full responsibility for their local communities, customers, and crews.
Though Dan passed away in 2019, his legacy lives on in every shingle, every project, and every handshake. The Weather-Tite family continues to serve with the same grit, heart, and purpose Dan instilled from day one. Now, with eyes on new regions like Arizona and Wyoming, Sam and his team carry the torch forward, fueled by the same mission: to serve people, restore property, and improve lives.
At Weather-Tite Exteriors, we don’t just fix storm damage—we prevent it. We’re not in it for the short-term—we’re building for generations. And we do it with purpose, passion, and a deep respect for the homes we protect.
