Keystone is a quaint town in the Black Hills of South Dakota. With roughly 240 year-round residents, the town really thrives during the tourist seasons (i.e. summer). Founded in 1883 as a mining settlement, Keystone became one of the richest gold-mining areas in the Black Hills. However, like many mining towns back then, the town started struggling as mining became less profitable. The town struggled to stay alive through the logging industry but finally came back to life in 1942 with the construction of Mt. Rushmore. Keystone became the ‘home of the carvers’ as most workers lived in Keystone during construction.
In 1876, Hill City was the first settlement established when gold was first discovered in the Black Hills in the French Creek. This initial settlement was just 13 miles south of where Hill City sits today.
Hill City nearly became a ghost town after gold stores had run dry in the area until the railroad and tin drew people back. The railroad industry upheld the town from 1900 well into the late 1900’s. In the 1950’s the first passenger train was introduced, commonly known as the 1880 train, which you can still ride today. More recently, Hill City became a hub for archeologists and explorers alike. The most complete T-Rex skeleton ever found in the world was discovered in the Hill City area.
Today, Hill City is a thriving community of around 1,000 people. The town thrives on bustling tourism industry and the local lumber mill. Today you can walk main street in Hill City and feel the history as you pass by the local shops and restaurants. With tons of events happening year round, Hill City is a constant hub for fun with outdoor and indoor activities. Bars, breweries, wineries, restaurants, snowmobiling, hiking, fishing and so much more.
Like Keystone, SD, Hill City is located in the upper regions of the Black Hills giving it a greater exposure to the wildly changing elements of South Dakota. Colder temperatures, more snow, hotter days and wilder storms can best describe Hill City’s weather. With over 85 reports of substantial hail and over 25 sever weather warnings in the last year alone, Hill City experiences some of the more sever weather during storms.
If you are looking to move to or are moving to move to Hill City, SD, consider Weather-Tite for all your roofing, siding and decking needs. As a locally owned business, we understand what is takes to care for our fellow citizens. We are proud of our foundation and look forward to providing premium services for Hill City and the whole of Black Hills.
